Around 170 participants exchanged views on the energy transition

On the 31st of October 2014, the Scientists for Future Symposium entitled “Opportunities and Obstacles of the Energy Transition” took place at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU). Around 170 people interested in the topic took part in the various presentations over the course of the afternoon/evening.

At the beginning, Prof Martin Hundhausen emphasised the urgency of the climate transition and presented some photovoltaic projects in Erlangen – especially at FAU. Dr. Eva Stegen then clearly demonstrated why nuclear energy is neither economical nor ecological and is therefore not a reasonable alternative when it comes to fighting the climate crisis. Prof Jürgen Karl pointed out the need for further expansion of renewable energies and the need to create reserve power plants in Germany. Two speakers from Fridays for Future emphasised the harmfulness of natural gas and called for natural gas drilling in Bavaria to be stopped.

In the second part, Ulrike Jahn highlighted the importance of energy communities and Dr. Stefan Holzheu pointed out the great potential of PV battery storage.

Afterwards, there was time to discuss the presentations and posters in a poster session.

A special highlight was the evening lecture by energy consultant and author Carsten Herbert, who is known as the “Energy Saving Commissioner” with his videos on energy saving. He explained to around 130 participants how energy can be saved at home (e.g. by using an energy-saving shower head in the shower) and the conditions under which a heat pump can be installed in an old building.

The presentations were recorded and can be viewed here.
